Nowadays, Alcona is part of the Town of Innisfil, but it wasn't always that way. The Geographic Names Board of Canada has records showing that we were registered in 1927 as Alcona Beach. By 1952, we were called Township of Alcona, and by 1978, it was truncated to Alcona. Props to Our Innisfil for this research.
Other search results in Google indicated that the township was registered in 1939 with the Geographic Names Board. Regardless, Alcona is part of the area now designated as the Town of Innisfil.
Fun fact: Alcona's motto on the town's sign used to be "Alcona - Achievement by Ambition". This coincided in part with the tenure of the former Reeve of Innisfil, Grant Andrade, who held this position from 1983-1988. For those unfamiliar with the term "reeve", it can be likened to mayor.
More interesting historical facts from Our Innisfil inform us that going back to about 1840, Alcona went by the handle of Michigan. Railway builders and workers may have brought this name up with them from north Michigan.
If you want to dig into more of our rich history - going right back to the beginning - visit Alcona Historical Society. You'll also want to check out Our Stories Innisfil for a walk down memory lane and lots of good local info including written accounts of oral history. Love that.
